Frequently
Asked Questions
1.
Why do I need a lawyer?
While it may not always be necessary to retain the services of
a lawyer for every legal matter that may arise, people often
attempt to handle a "simple" legal
matter on their own, only to eventually realize that the matter wasn't so simple
after all. Lawyers are trained to assist people in navigating an often complex
and sometimes unforgiving legal system. It is often the wisest course of action
to seek legal advice before proceeding with a legal matter.
2.
Can I represent myself?
Yes. However, as a wise man once said: "A person who represents himself
has a fool for a client." It is almost always better to hire an experienced
lawyer to assist you with legal matters.
3.
If I believe I am guilty of a crime and I want to accept responsibility,
why do I need a lawyer?
Because the criminal justice system can be harsh and unforgiving even to those
who believe they are guilty and wish to accept responsibility. An experienced
lawyer can provide you with the assurance that you will be given the best opportunity
to have your side of the story presented to the court. In addition, although
you may believe you are responsible for a crime, you may in fact be innocent.
It is best to have an experienced criminal defense lawyer assist you when your
freedom and future are at stake.
4.
Why do we have so many lawyers in this country?
Because we are a nation of laws. Due process and individual freedom are held
sacred here. Nations such as North Korea, Iran, China, Cuba, and many others
have very few lawyers compared to the United States. The citizenry of those nations
are compelled to live with very little freedom and little or no due process of
law. While our system may not be perfect, it is the best system of government
the world has ever known.
